Key Takeaways:
- Training package updates can affect qualifications, units, assessment requirements and packaging rules, so RTOs should review each release against their current scope and delivery materials.
- Changes to the RII training package can extend across mining, drilling, emergency response, risk management and supervisory competencies, making early impact reviews important for affected RTOs.
- Updates to the AUR training package increasingly address emerging automotive technologies, changing safety practices and specialist skills such as ADAS, tyre servicing and alternative-fuel vehicles.
- RTOs delivering from the AUM training package should check whether revised qualifications or replacement units affect their training and assessment materials, scope or transition planning.
- Tracking AUSMASA projects and published training package updates gives RTOs more time to assess changes, update affected documentation and prepare for revised training products before they influence delivery.
The Australian Industry Standards Manufacturing and Skills Alliance (AUSMASA) is spearheading key training package updates that will impact RTOs delivering qualifications from the AUM, AUR, and RII training packages. These updates are focused on improving alignment with industry needs, emerging technologies, and compliance expectations.
Below, we’ve grouped the updates by training package to help you understand what’s changing—and what your RTO should do to stay compliant.
Projects for the RII Training Package
Emergency Response Qualifications Review
The Emergency Response Qualifications Review is an ongoing project led by AUSMASA in partnership with BuildSkills Australia. This initiative aims to overhaul emergency response training within the RII training package, aligning it with modern WHS legislation, evolving workplace risks, and the operational needs of resource sector employers.

What Your RTO Should Do Now
Each of these AUSMASA-led training package updates presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Rather than wait for the last-minute scramble after endorsement, RTOs should act now to prepare for change.
Start by reviewing your scope to identify qualifications or units likely to be impacted. Subscribe to AUSMASA’s project pages and monitor draft components as they are released. Most importantly, assess whether your existing training materials will remain compliant. If not, begin sourcing or planning for compliant resource replacements.
Proactive RTOs who stay ahead of transition timelines are better positioned to maintain uninterrupted delivery, preserve compliance, and continue offering relevant, job-ready training. For more information on transitioning training products, check out this guide.
